FEM (Finite Element Modelling)

EMICAD is specialized in FEM for pressure vessels.

We can perform calculations FEM for:

  • Piping Intersections, Nozzles (in Flat Plates, Cones, Tanks, Heads, including Hillside Nozzles)
  • Reinforcing Pads.
  • Stanchions on bends.
  • Piping Supports.
  • Lugs.
  • Mitred elbows.
  • Bends, reducing elbows.
  • Cylindrical and conical segments.
  • Annular plates.
  • Spherical or elliptical heads.
  • Multiple nozzles, an L-plate.
  • A pad reinforced fabricated cross.
  • A pipe beam elements.
  • Storage tank.
  • Plate attachments (lugs, saddles, shoes etc) for shell and nozzle elements.
  • Fatigue evaluation for vessels and nozzles.
  • Stress calculation for nozzle loads.

The nozzle loadings calculations for example is, performed either with WRC 107/BS5500 method or with FEM. Since WRC 107/BS5500 methods are limited in scope, pending the available graphic curves, sometimes FEM method is required in order to solve the problem.

This is the case for instance if d/D --> 1, when all the factors are well beyond the content of the graphic curves. In this case not only the nozzle loading problem is beyond the scope of the method, but also the reinforcing of the opening calculated as per code sheets D0501 (Stoomwezen) or UG37 (ASME VIII Div.1) is difficult to achieve.

In both cases FEM offer a convenient method to solve the problem with less material.
